Everyone knew Dave Bastian's Wharton Wildcats would play an extremely disciplined offense. Newsome coach Jon MacKey decided to answer in kind, and the Wolves responded with an equally disciplined offense of their own. After a 32 minute test, the Newsome version proved to be superior as the Wolves defeated the Wildcats 42-33. The small crowd was perhaps somewhat diminished in number due to the district championship girls soccer game taking place outside against the archrival Bloomingdale Bulls, but they more than made up for it in quality as they cheered their team to victory.
Trent MacKey led Newsome with 12 points, followed by Charles Murphy with 10, while Andy Suslavich and Samal Shepherd added 8 apiece. In the fourth quarter, the Wolves came up big from the free throw line, making 6 of 6 to prevent the Wildcats from making serious inroads, in spite of a couple of big threes from freshman AJ Astroth. Astroth led Wharton with 12 points, followed by sophomore Xavier Owens with 8.
With the win, Newsome's magic number for the top seed in the district tournament is down to two, and the team controls its own destiny. With a win at Armwood on Tuesday and at home against Tampa Bay Tech Friday, Newsome would win the district championship. In addition to the two district matchups, the Wolves also have non-district matchups remaining against Lennard Wednesday, at Plant City February 2 and at East Bay February 5.
