Saturday night the Newsome boys basketball team defeated Tampa Bay Tech 70-53 for it's first district championship. As they have all year, the Titans played hard, aggressive basketball. At halftime, Newsome led by just 4 points at 29-25. In the third quarter it got even tougher. Jake Hodges and Trent Mackey both went to the bench early in the period with three fouls and TBT managed to gain a two point lead. At that point, the rest of the Wolves raised their intensity about six notches. Samal Shepherd created an amazing offensive show off the dribble. Jamel Gist hit a pull-up jumper from 18. Dylan Bridges nailed three buckets for 8 fourth-quarter points, LaCorte Suber took a charge and Cody Dowd pulled down several rebounds as the Wolves more than held their own. With the starters back in the game, Newsome quickly pulled out to a 10 point lead at 54-44 by the time 2 and a half minutes had ticked off the fourth quarter clock. They continued to build the lead, culminating in a 70-57 Victory As district champions, Newsome will host the Springstead High School Eagles in regional action Thursday at 7:00 PM. If the team wins that game, they will set a new record for wins with 21.
