Springstead coach Steve Thompson was worried about Newsome's physical play inside the paint. It must have been something of a surprise when the Wolves opened the game with four straight three pointers on their way to a 17-0 lead. The game was over almost as soon as it started. In the first quarter Trent Mackey nailed three shots from long distance and Samal Shepherd popped a couple as Newsome streaked to a 26-5 lead by the end of the period. When Springstead switched to a man defense, Shepherd found new ways to score and Jake Hodges joined the scoring frenzy. The Wolves dominated the Eagles defensively, as Cody Dowd and others owned the boards. Mackey and Jamel Gist did a great job of keeping the Eagles guards off-balance. In the first and third quarters, when the starters got the bulk of the minutes, the Eagles scored a total of just 10 points. In the second half, the running clock sped up the game and Newsome cleared the bench. Shepherd led on the scoreboard with 26 points, while Hodges had 13 and Mackey 11. Dowd, Gist, Bridges and freshmen Connor Heitzman and Adam Kraemer combined for the rest of the points. With the victory Newsome extended their record to 21-8, a new record for wins in a season. They will continue post-season play Tuesday at Ocala Forest, a 60-27 winner over Tampa Bay Tech. Back Archived 2007-2008 Basketball page |
