At 13-2, this years Newsome basketball team has already set the standard for the most wins in school history. Wednesday, they will put that record on the line as they face the defending district champion Wharton Wildcats for the first time this year. While the 5-11 Wildcats appear to be in a rebuilding mode after graduating four college-bound players including Shawn Van Zant of Butler University, they are by no means toothless, having scored a 19 point win over district foe King along with a 10 point win against Tampa Bay Tech. Wharton is led by three seniors in double digit scoring, Derek Holmes, Chris Jean-Louis, and Manuel Anthony.
In a somber note, it has been reported that Evan Ravenel of Brandon has been suspended by the FHSAA for three weeks for a confrontation with a referee in Kissimmee. Fortunately, his suspension should be over before Brandon faces Newsome again January 23.
***Update...Ravenel will not be available until 1/25, two games after Brandon visits the Wolves den and one game before the district tournament.
