Slow Start, Frenetic Finish at Brandon

The young Eagles squad came out in the first half looking as poised as a squad of seniors returning from a run at the state championship. Brandon ran an extremely patient offense that consistently resulted in made shots. Their defense dictated the tempo to the Wolves, who looked timid and uncertain throughout the first half. Coach Allie Turley held the ball for the last minute of the first half, and the Eagles jubilantly raced from the floor at halftime with a commanding 28-18 lead. With the hometown faithful giving their approval with a screaming chorus, this young team looked every bit as capable as the team that made a run to the final four last year.

The second half could not have been more different. While Brandon was able to hit a couple of jump shots early, in the second half it was the Wolves turn to take control. Possession after possession, the wolves came away with the ball, often resulting in a layup on the other end. The eagles increasingly resorted to tossing up off-balanced three pointers as the wolves outscored them by 20 points in the second half. As the game wound to a close, there some tense moments as Jake Hodges went for the dunk and was undercut by an Eagle player, but both teams were able to keep emotions in check as Newsome held on for a 55-46 victory.

The Wolves were led by three players in double figures, Samal Shepherd with 16, Jake Hodges with 15, and Trent Mackey with 10. Cody Dowd added 8 points with a perfect 4 for 4 night from the field. Charles Murphy, whose effort and hustle kept the team in the game through the seeminglessly endless first half, added 7 points. Several other players, including Dylan Bridges and Steve MacNeil contributed greatly to the Wolves success. The Eagles were led offensively by junior Travis Green with 18 and freshman Charles Johnson with 13. You can expect to hear a lot more out of Johnson over the next 4 years!

This week should probably be labeled rivals week as the soccer teams host Bloomingdale tonight (girls at 6, boys at 8), as does boys basketball on Thursday.
