The Newsome High School basketball held their annual awards banquet March 2 at the Outback Steak House. Head Coach Jon Mackey took the opportunity to congratulate the team on a stellar, record breaking season with a record of 18-8 (the official record of 16-8 excludes two preseason victories). In the course of the year, many team and indivicual milestones were set. Some memorable moments included opening the season with a 41 point win over Frostproof and a 59 point win against Hernando.

The first of many individuals that were recognized was senior Quincy Howell, who won the 6th man award. After being a late addition to the team, Quincy not only succeeded but excelled, starting the last several games of the season and providing quality minutes on both ends of the floor the entire year. Quincy was also named to an all-county team for his three point shootout team. Senior Jimmy Joyce was awarded the most improved player for his efforts, and senior Jared Dotson earned the academic achievement award with a 5.3 GPA. Junior Charles Murphy was awarded the hustle award for his floor burns and intensity both in practice and in games throughout the campaign. For the Junior Varsity, Sophomore Ron Nobles was recognized as the JV player most likely to contribute to the varsity next year.

All 12 varsity players received letters, and in addition senior manager Henry Johnson, who worked diligently throughout the year lettered for the varsity as did Aaron Nadeau for the JV. The labor and contribution of these two deserved special recognition as they went above and beyond what is usually expected of a team manager.

Senior Dylan Fugate was recognized as the Wolves' MVP. Dylan was named to the Hillsborough County first team all-county team for the second consecutive year and finishes his career holding twelve school records including:

Finally there was a moment both exciting and somber. Assistant Coach and JV Coach Joel Bower introduced his wife and baby and announced that he is making a move to spend more time with them. Joel has made great sacrifices to drive to Newsome every day from downtown Tampa, and his service has been greatly appreciated. We appreciate all of the hard work Joel has put in and applaud his decision to put his family at the top of his time priorities. He will be sorely missed and in Coach Mackey's words, "He has been a large part of this program's success." We wish Coach Bower's the greatest success!
