Despite a sluggish start, the Newsome Wolves were able to walk off the court Wednesday night with a 62-47 district win over the Armwood Hawks. The Wolves were led in scoring by another impressive performance by senior guard Samal Shepherd with 29 points. Senior Jake Hodges added 22. The shot-blocking prowess of Armwood senior Demetrius Jackson was impressive as he managed to block 9 shots in the game. On Friday, the team will travel to Tampa Bay Tech for their final district outing of the year. Should the Wolves win, they will secure at least the second place seed in the district tournament, which will be hosted this year in the Wolves Den. If the Plant City Raiders succeed in upending the Durant Cougars Friday at Plant City, the Wolves will be given the top seed. Tampa Bay Tech is fourth in the district standings and is finishing a tough three-game stand against the top three teams in the district. The Titans are led in scoring by senior guard LaCarlton Nelson with 17 points per game. Nelson does a bit of everything and is in the top two for the Titans in virtually every statistical category. In the first two meetings between these teams, Nelson had 22 points to lead all scorers. Back Archived 2007-2008 Basketball page |
