Monday, the Wolves travel to Brandon to take on the perennial powerhouse Eagles. This year, however, we know much less what to expect under first year head coach and former JV coach Allie Turley. After a final four finish under outgoing coach Mark Hermann, the Eagles graduated 8 players. The Eagles always seem to come up with a crop of excellent players, however. Expect big things from 6'8" Junior Jadon Stringfellow, a lanky center with excellent fundamentals and a nice 10 foot jumper. Brandon is currently 0-1 on the fledgling season, having dropped their first contest to 6A Robinson.
On Thursday the Wolves return home to take on the archrival Bloomingdale Bulls, a preseason district favorite with the newspapers. The Bulls sport an experienced and talented roster that includes last years county scoring leader Callum Townsend, state 3 point shoot out finalist Sean Hayes, defensive standout Sean Rooks as well as transfers Joe Raga and Tim Coffey. As with every meeting between these two teams in any sport, expect the large and vociferous crowd of students to provide extra entertainment.
In a blast from the past, current sophomore guard Jamel Gist's older brother Justin's St Josephs of Brooklyn is currently rated number 1 in the 32 member US collegiate Athletic Association D2. As a sophomore, Justin continues to be a leader for his team on both offensive and defense.
The girls basketball team is working hard to improve on last season's record, having recorded a resounding 68-37 win over Brandon, their lone setback being a 52-49 loss to Plant City. Things are really looking up for this years team, Dana Williams recorded a whopping 24 points in the victory over Brandon, joined in double figures by teammates Kelsey Rodriguez and Danielle Chasten. With the team expecting the return of standout guard Ashley Fuchs in the near future, watch for the girls to put forth their best results in Newsome history this year.
Since it's thanksgiving, we'll offer a little retrospective. We are thankful for teachers, coaches, and administrators who go beyond what is required and far beyond what the paycheck covers. While coaches do get paid, if you could calculate the dollars per hour, there is no way they get even minimum wage, and they may even lose money for their efforts! While most of us are enjoying the Thanksgiving holidays, our basketball coaches are hard at work, taking only Thursday off. During the summer and fall, the team plays in various camps and tournaments; all of which is unpaid time. In return, the coach can expect criticism whenever the team loses while any praise after a team wins will be showered on the players. The next time you get the opportunity, thank a coach for the unpaid time, extra effort and passion he or she devotes to your kids!
