The Hillsborough County boys basketball all-star game was held last night at Tampa Prep, featuring such players as Florida football signee Mike McFarland (6'7), Bloomingdale's Tim Coffey and our own Samal Shepherd and Jake Hodges. Hodges led all scorers with 20 points, including four three pointers to earn accolades as the most valuable player for the East all-stars. East led the game by as many as 18 in the second half. As in many all-star games, some players felt that they were best served by jacking up some kind of shot, no matter how bad every time they touched the ball, and such play by East resulted in a late comeback from the West squad. As East ultimately need to protect the lead with just seconds to play, a player whom we will not name here threw up the worst kind of junk at the worst possible moment, giving West the ball down by two. Wharton's Damian Dixon found Hillsborough's Al'von Woodard open for a three with a second left, giving West their only lead of the game and a 105-103 victory. As a result of their fine play, both Hodges and Samal Shepherd were tapped by the coaches to continue their season one final game in the Hillsborough v Pinellas all-star game March 19 at Hillsborough Community College.
