District tournament action tipped off last night in the Bloomingdale gym. King opened the day taking on seventh place Brandon, and took a decisive 29 point lead into the halftime locker room. In the third and fourth quarters the Lions concentrated on getting dunk opportunities for big men Toarlyn Fitzpatrick and others. Coach Sam Lanier pulled the plug on the starters with four minutes left and a 50 point lead and rode it out for a 76-27 victory. In the nightcap, Newsome took on the Freedom Patriots. Senior Brandon Bertorello knew he was in his last game, and he played with courage, leading his team with 26 points. Bertorello finished the night with 26 points to lead the Patriots. It was a rough night overall for the rest of the Freedom offense, who managed a total of only 22 points. From the Newsome end of the bench, it was a much more well-rounded affair. Samal Shepherd led the offense with 26 points while Trent MacKey and Charles Murphy chipped in with 15 and 12. Mr. Murphy demonstrated his athleticism repeatedly, blocking at least 3 shots and making innumerable hustle rebounds and saves. The crowd pleasing play of the day, however, had to be when Shepherd took out after a loose ball on the sidelines and went "bowling for coaches". Fortunately neither Shepherd nor coach MacKey were injured on the play! Play continues in the Bulls gym tonight as fourth and fifth seeds TBT and Armwood meet at 6:00 for the right to play the Wolves Friday at 8:00. In the second game tonight, host Bloomingdale will take on the sixth-seeded Wharton Wildcats for the opportunity to face King Friday night at 6:00. Both of these games should be highly competitive, so true fans should be on hand for another exciting night of high school basketball!
